I totally agree. Professional and personal networks are inter-twined. I must confess, I have done both, though. For one, I was more worried about not rocking the boat, that missed the boat. The second, I was told I was verbose, and that upset the boat, so I started tuning it down. Both were big mistakes. Not that I ever stopped learning or building, but my career has not turned where and when I needed it to. So to prove your point, don't be afraid to kick but! It pays. Now that we are in a white-collar turn down, it is more important that ever. Also, if one scans the job reqs out there for professionals, one will find that requirements are steeper earlier in a career path than before. This equates to letting one-self cost in their four walls job, then losing it. Now try to catch up with the new guys in town! It won't be easy. Like you stated, there is a LOT of talented folks oput there right now, and it is only going to become more competive.

Having a strong network can make getting laid off a lot less stressful. Too bad for too many, its too late.
